IUEC March 2023

Local Roundup LOCAL 85 • Lansing, Michigan Greetings from Mid-Michigan, the Great Lakes State! Pure Michigan! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! We made it to March. Hopefully the weather will start looking like springtime, but you just never know what’s going to happen these days. Our first few months of winter have been pretty mild, so we can’t complain too much. Our next union meeting will be on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. The Executive Board will meet at 5:00 p.m. and the probationary mentoring meeting will be immediately following the union meeting. NEIEP classes are going well. We have four classes going plus a Mechanic’s Review class. Welding has started up again after the holidays, so if you need to get certified or recertified, contact me or the hall on how to get signed up. Mechanic Required CE training must be completed annually by all mechanics who passed the Mechanic’s Exam on or after July 9, 2022. This is in accordance with the current IUEC Collective Bargaining Agreement, which requires mechanics to complete the training in order to be eligible for wage rate increases. Mechanics who passed the Mechanic’s Exam before July 9, 2022 will be grandfathered. The training will be optional for them. The Mechanic Required Continuing Education Course must be completed every year in order for mechanics to receive pay increases in the next calendar year. Using Google Chrome on a laptop or desktop computer, log onto NEIEP’s website. A link to the training page will be on your dashboard. Once you click the link and it takes you to the training page, you must read the instructions before beginning. Each section must be completed for you to receive a certificate. You can then return back to the original page for your status and reimbursement history. The work picture is still looking good right now. We currently have everyone working and have a few transients working in our local. Don’t forget to call in when you change jobs. It is in our Local 85 Constitution & By-Laws that you must call in whenever you change jobs. If you are on a job and you have questions as to how something should be done or if safety is a concern, please contact your supervisor. Don’t just assume you are doing it correctly if you aren’t sure. Put it back on them, but always make sure you are following the company’s safety policies and procedures. Sign up for a MyLink account. You will be able to check your benefit hours monthly: https://mylink.iuec.org. Last month’s question was, “Do slack-rope devices on winding drum machines need to be tested?” The answer is ASME A17.1-2010 – 8.6.4.19.4 – Slack-rope devices on winding drum machines shall be operated manually and tested to determine conformance with the applicable requirements (Item 2.20.2.1). This month’s question is “Do all elevators need to have electrical drawings on the job?” The answer will be in next month’s journal article. The Big Buck Contest winner is Glen Grooms. Glen took a nice 15-point buck, which was pictured in last month’s journal.
