Local Roundup A combo of gold cards from Jeff and Bill Newcomb, father and son Jeff being presented with his Gold Card March 2023 57 Also, with all of the firsts, sadly, we announce the first member who passed away since the last meetings. Retired Brother Ken Hiebert passed away this last January. He was a long-time member who had a career that all of us would have wanted to have. He was a big man with unmatched skill and strength. I never had the opportunity to work with Brother Hiebert, but ALL of the members who had the chance to work with him said that he was revered and, most importantly, commanded the respect of all of those around him. As always, work hard and be safe. Brother Raj Papaiya Membership attendance kicking off the hall’s new location LOCAL 83 • Tulsa, Oklahoma Greetings from Local 83. Well, we have had a lot of things happen here in Local 83. We have had guys retire, picked up new guys, had picnics, and changed instructors for school. The list is fairly long but one of the things we want to highlight is Jeff Newcomb retiring. He was a great member of Local 83 coming to most every meeting and participating in this local for many years. He was presented with his Gold Card at a meeting which his dad came to carrying his very own Gold Card. Pretty cool to see a father-son combo of Gold Cards, and we just want to once more say thanks to Jeff for his years of service and participation in our local!! Aside from that, work seems to be ok right now. We need some mod and construction jobs to get busy again so we can get everyone back to work and hire some new probies. School has started back up and we are excited to have two new teachers who were willing to step into those roles and help teach our apprentices this great trade. Thanks, guys!! One thing we did which was pretty cool was we invited two guest speakers to come to our orientation and talk to the guys about their careers and where this could take them. One was Dave Scholes and the other was Mike Long. They were both great elevators guys and each have had and are having great success in this trade. They came in and talked about the things that would take the students a long way in this trade and it was cool to hear their stories, and how their hard work and dedication has paid off for them many times over. Thanks to both of them for taking the time out of their schedules for that! Well, on to the really important stuff…only up from here, right?! OU can’t possibly be any worse this year, right? I guess we will see. Other than that, I don’t know much else. I hope everyone is kicking off this year healthy and happy. Have a great month and stay safe, Brothers and Sisters. Fraternally, Curtis Lear Jeff and Bill Newcomb, just a little younger
