IUEC March 2023

Local Roundup LOCAL 80 March 2023 55 LOCAL 80 • Greensboro, North Carolina Greetings from Local 80! Time flies! It’s hard to believe that March is already upon us. Work here is good. We have probationaries working and are in the middle of a recruiting process to refresh our hiring list. We will probably interview about 80 candidates. We have started a list of people who are interested in relocating to our neck of the woods. Our website, iueclocal80.org, has a link to an email address to contact us if you are interested. Local 80 had eighteen members successfully challenge the Mechanic’s Exam in 2022. We will probably see similar numbers this year. Congratulations to our newest mechanics! Election of Local 80 officers will take place at our General Meeting, which will be held on Friday, March 3. You must have the current dues card to be able to cast a ballot. Installation of the new officers will take place at the April general meeting, which has been moved to April 10 because of Good Friday. CORRECTION: Dianne Russ, beloved wife of member Craig Russ, who had passed away suddenly, was mistakenly identified in a Constructor article as Carolyn Russ. She was related to several other Local 80 members, as well as members of other locals. I regret the error and apologize for any distress that this may have caused. Rest in peace, Dianne. Finally, we all know that safety is being stressed more now than ever before. There is now a safety article in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Most of the companies have their own safety policies and some are requiring extensive safety training of all new employees before being sent to the job. Some have weekly toolbox safety calls and regular in-person safety training. Many of us remember when a hard hat and safety glasses being tossed to us when we started working with a new company was the extent of our safety training. We have chosen a profession that has many risks to life and limb. Safety must be more than a “policy” for all of us. It must be an instinct. We all have people who expect us to come home whole every day. Let us not let them down! Remember, WE CAME TO THIS PROFESSION TO ENJOY A BETTER LIFE NOT A SHORTER ONE! President Christensen says, “No one should give up his or her life for their job.” BE SAFE AT WORK AND AT PLAY!! Roger C. Shumate Safety is NO accident. STAY ALERT... DON’T GET HURT.
