IUEC March 2023

Local Roundup Retired Brother Tom Roe living the dream LOCAL 71 • Miami, Florida Greetings from sunny South Florida. With great sadness we have to report the recent passing of Local 71 member Greg Levenson. Greg started in our trade in January of 2001, being initiated in April 2002, finishing his NEIEP schooling and becoming a mechanic in October of 2006. He was not one to sit around and watch, but one who wanted to be involved and participate so he helped with many of 71’s committees and activities. While still an apprentice, in 2004 he was nominated and elected as a member on our Executive Board and held that position for eight years, becoming its chairman. While serving on the Executive Board he took over the reins of the Picnic Committee and Toy Drive, continued improving on plans, and building our annual picnic into the great fun time that it is today. Being elected to represent Local 71 for the 2011 IUEC Convention in Orlando, he returned to be elected and took the oath as Local 71’s Business Representative in January 2012. He was always busy and forward thinking with his heart into making our local better. He represented Local 71 at the 2016 IUEC Convention in Chicago and in 2019 was elected as our business manager. He managed the Local in a business-like manner, having weekly meetings with our business representatives and Dawn, our office admin, to discuss what tasks were done and what tasks needed to be done. He became a NEIEP instructor, and he had a full schedule. In 2017, while attending an international meeting in Maryland, after the fourth day of business, a poker tournament was held that anyone in attendance could participate in. When the tournament began, there were at least 40 full tables that took up two and a half big meeting rooms of players. Greg knew the game and had played with friends, but never in a competitive setting. He decided to join in. This writer was there, it was a packed house, but ye scribe, having minimal interest soon left to do other things and would return every hour or so to see what players had been eliminated. Each time upon returning, there was Greg, still in the mix. Much later and down to one roomful of tables, Greg was still in the fight. Now well after midnight and down to only two tables, there was Greg, still duking it out with the best of them. Needless to say Greg Levenson was the last man standing and walked away with the grand prize, which was actually two prizes, an IUEC ring and bragging rights. Well, he was extra proud of that ring, but in typical Greg fashion, the latter he didn’t use much. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Greg met his future wife Liz in 1999 a few years before he got into the elevator business at a little sports bar in Miami Springs called Murphy’s. They married in 2001 and in 2005, continued on next page Greg chillin’ at the Orlando Convention March 2023 53 of our fellow brothers and sisters pass away too soon and not reap the rewards of our great retirement. Word to the wise: Get out as soon as you are able to and enjoy time with the ones you’ve worked so hard for. With that being said, the Safety Committee is currently putting together a list of brothers and sisters who have an interest in becoming CPR certified. Please call the Local to add your name if you are interested. As always, look out for one another and have each other’s back. “BE A BROTHER TO A BROTHER AND A SISTER TO A SISTER.” Work smartly, be safe and thank a veteran, Brian R.
