50 The ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTOR Local Roundup Brother JJ Threat and Brother Ken David of Local 74 with former Local 50 Office Manager Lore Wilkes Business Reps. Brother Drew Marks and Terry Shannon meeting the KONE construction crew LOCAL 50 • Toronto, Canada Greetings from Toronto. Through the freezing temperatures here, the work situation is still hot with employment high in all sectors of the industry. With all the work needing to be done, there comes a cost. Doing things fast should never come at the cost of safety or of following the rules. If we are willing to sacrifice our own safety and that of our co-workers, how can we expect our employers to respect our skills and our rights. Generations have fought for the wages and safer working conditions we have today, yet some are willing to give up those gains for selfish short-term rewards. Working the safe way isn’t a burden or making the job longer; it’s what gets us home safe and sound at the end of every day. Eight hours of pay for eight hours of work. Work safely and work to the provincial agreement and our constitution and bylaws so we can all enjoy long and prosperous lives. Let’s stand up for ourselves on the job and if something is not right or safe call the hall. If you are put up or knocked down, please call the hall, and remember to call in your job starts. When we cross over into Local 90 and 96, we need to call our hall and call the local in which we are entering. If you are injured at work your first call should be to the business reps. at the hall, then to your employer. No matter how small the injury, please be your own safety rep. With all the things we as a society have lost over the course of the pandemic, the sense of union and connection with each other has been lacking. One of those times that brings out the best (and worst in terms of skating, Mike Stoewner) in us is the Local 50 Ian McFarlane Hockey Tournament, finally set to return for April 21, 2023, at Canlan Ice Sports Scarbrough. Let’s have a great turn out and hopefully Selco will finally get their comeuppance.
