42 The ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTOR Local Roundup LOCAL 28 LOCAL 28 • Omaha, Nebraska Greetings from the Heartland of America. The January meeting started with the swearing in of new officers for the 2023 term by Local 28 International Organizer Steve Simpson. I have posted a photo of our new officers. They are, from left to right, Trustee Jeremy Taylor, Treasurer Jeff Cernik, Business Manager Matt McAtee, Vice President Phil Augustyn, E-Board Ryan Tarks, Warden Jared Linhart, and President Brad Paxton. Also not shown in the photo is Madeline Greenfield who was re-elected as our recording secretary. Newly elected E-Board members are Ryan Tarks, Craig Erickson, Jess Podrazo, Brad Paxton and Phil Augustyn. Congratulations and thanks to all of you for your commitment and service to the Local. The work situation is looking pretty good for the future. However, at the time of this writing (January 26, 2023) work is running a bit slow with three mechanics and one apprentice on the bench. Local 28 recently received a thank you letter from Local 5, Philadelphia, expressing their appreciation for the contribution we sent for the Lift for a Vet program. And once again, we thank Local 5 for providing retired Brother Gene Anderson with a stair lift for his home. Gene said the lift makes it much easier to complete his honey-do lists. Steve Simpson addressed the body about continuing education, which in some cases will be mandatory. He also talked about how the safety of our trade has improved with new safety awareness programs. In the past the IUEC was averaging six on-thejob fatalities per year. Recently that number has been reduced to only one fatality per year. These stats are for our brothers who died on the job due to accidents and do not include heart attacks, car wrecks, etc. Local 28 saluted Brother Dan Rocha (U.S. Army National Guard) at the January union meeting. His unit has been deployed to an undisclosed location somewhere near the Horn of Africa. We assured him that we will have his back while he is away and that his job will be waiting for him when he gets home. By the way, Dan was one of Local 28’s contestants to fight in last year’s Blue Collar Boxing event. Thank you for stepping into the ring and a bigger thank you for your service to our country.
