Local Roundup LOCAL 19 • Seattle, Washington Hello and well wishes to all. As this article is being written in late January, we are still doing well in Local 19 regarding the amount of work going on in our vast region. Our off-work list currently has a few names on it, and we are hopeful to have full employment as the winter wears on. We held our January general meeting at the new Seattle Labor Temple. The meeting was well attended, and service awards were presented to several members. Recipients included Bruce Gullickson, Jacob Berry, and Oliver Belland, as they received recognition and pins for their 15 years of membership in Local 19, Seattle. Kris Gray received his 25-year pin and service award as well. Alec Arima received his 40-year pin and service award from Jim Bender and Patrick Strafer when they were making their rounds in Alaska—a grand milestone indeed. In Eastern Washington, Local 19 Business Representative Eric Mills presented Shane Sweeney with his 25year pin and service award, Tim Cejka received his 15-year pin and service award, and Rod Spaniel received his honorary membership Gold Card. Congratulations to all on these memorable career milestones. There is a limit on the number of photos a correspondent may submit with each monthly article. I will do my best to get all photos that I receive from members in future entries. Another important part of our January meeting was the swearing in of newly elected officers. Those members included Vice President Lindsay LaBrosse; Executive Board Members David Madison, Jon Madison, and Aaron Wiegand; Trustee John Cummings; Warden Jacob PeterSandiford; and Recording Secretary Dustin Olson. Good luck to the officers of Local 19 as they take on the challenges of their respective positions. On a sad note, I regret to inform readers that former Local 19 member and retiree Leroy Hallock passed away on January 19, 2023, at the age of 87. Lee started his Local 19 career in 1958 at Sound Elevator where he worked for 37 years. Lee’s wife Bobbie shared that “Lee was always a kind and cheerful man, and she was blessed to have known him for 65 years.” Local 19 officers and members send sincere condolences to the Hallock family. The Local 19 Joint Apprenticeship Committees have approved 32 apprentices to sit for their Mechanic’s Exam after passing their final required course in the fall semester of 2022. IUEC Local 19 has had a proud history regarding the success of our apprentices who have sat for the NEIEP Mechanic’s Exam. Our instructors have always raised the bar on classroom participation, and it shows. I would encourage all exam candidates to open and complete the CE025 Mechanic’s Exam Preparation course to ready themselves for the Prometric exam. The NEIEP staff and I are always available to help if you have questions on how to access online training for the Mechanic’s Exam or licensing. The training that NEIEP provides is a benefit that all members should be using to better themselves in our ever-changing and demanding industry. “Tools in the toolbox” is a term used quite often, and if you think about it, a computer is as useful a tool as any other. Get familiar with using the NEIEP website and take advantage of all it has to offer. continued on next page LOCAL 19 March 2023 37 Fifteen-year service award recipients Bruce Gullickson, Jacob Berry, and Oliver Belland are pictured with Patrick Strafer as presenter.
